The Public International Law & Policy Group (PILPG) congratulates the Parties to the Sudanese Peace Talks and all people of Sudan on today’s historic initialing of a comprehensive peace agreement for Sudan. The path to peace in Sudan has not been easy, and today’s initialing in Juba, South Sudan is the culmination of years of hard work by the Sudanese people and their perseverance in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges to peace.

Critically, this peace agreement seeks to overcome decades of conflict and violent oppression, as well as dozens of failed attempts at peace by addressing both the root causes and the consequences of the conflicts in Sudan. The Parties have achieved a truly comprehensive agreement, both in terms of its substance and its reach across all parts of Sudan. The agreement addresses not only the numerous drivers and effects of the conflicts in Darfur and the Two Areas, but also provides for critical reforms in Eastern, Northern, and Central Sudan that are necessary for achieving a durable and nationwide peace. Furthermore, the Parties were able to agree on a range of national- level issues that will support Sudan’s broader ongoing political transition.

This agreement is a fantastic achievement of all the Parties involved, including especially the opposition movements and the Transitional Government of Sudan, who worked together throughout the negotiations as partners for peace. This agreement builds upon the triumphant accomplishments of the December Revolution and its calls for freedom, peace, and justice. Now, as the process moves toward the formal signing of the final text and preparations for implementation, PILPG further extends its encouragement and support to the Parties. The durability of Sudan’s peace and political reforms will rely on the effective and efficient implementation of this agreement as part of the broader political transition process.

It has been PILPG’s great honor to have been able to provide advice and support to this peace process, and to have been a partner for peace in Sudan for more than a decade. PILPG looks forward to the coming stages of the peace process and to the realization of a Sudan founded on freedom, peace, and justice.
